As Vessel Captain, you will lead vessel operations throughout CargoKite’s year-long testing campaign. Based in Lisbon, you’ll be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our catamaran prototype. You’ll collaborate closely with the engineering team as we test and integrate cutting-edge technologies—starting with baseline operations and progressing to kite propulsion and autonomous navigation. This hands-on role will involve frequent coastal and offshore deployments.
In detail, you will play a leading role in one of the most innovative testing campaigns in maritime R&D today. You will:
Command our 26-meter prototype vessel throughout a 12-month coastal and offshore sea trial program.
Oversee vessel operations in collaboration with engineering and autonomy teams during each test phase.
Ensure safe navigation, equipment readiness, and the seamless integration of novel systems—first mechanical, then kite-based propulsion, and eventually autonomous features.
Support technical data collection, provide operational feedback, and help shape procedures for future commercial deployments.
Maintain high standards of safety, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving throughout evolving testing scenarios.
Occasional onshore missions (vessel outfitting support, shipyard follow-up, training)
Minimum Qualifications:
STCW Master (Code vessels <200 GT, limited to 150 miles from a safe haven)
RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Commercially Endorsed – Power)
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Experience commanding offshore support vessels, workboats, or in research/delivery campaigns
Fluency in Portuguese and English
Knowledge of the Tagus estuary, Lisbon waters, and local maritime regulations
Strong knowledge and experience of onboarding engineering and repairs
Familiarity with experimental/R&D maritime operations
Strong passage planning, navigation, and safety management skills
Experience in testing campaigns or with novel maritime technologies or wind-assisted propulsion systems is a big plus
Valid ENG1 medical and required travel/work documentation
Adaptability, proactive mindset, and strong leadership in crew management
Interest in clean-tech, maritime innovation, or autonomous systems a strong bonus
Competitive monthly salary or project-based contract, depending on your preference
The opportunity to be part of a venture-backed clean-tech project shaping the next era of container shipping
A collaborative, purpose-driven team environment with high ownership and real-world impact
A chance to work on the frontier of maritime autonomy and wind propulsion
