THE ROLE & THE TEAM

As a Principal Data Engineer in the Inspiration and Entertainment area, your role involves architecting and developing the data intensive systems and services that will power the end-to-end discovery and engagement focused journey, making a direct impact on over 50 million Zalando customers across 25 countries and counting.

We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer with hands-on experience in building data pipelines and systems for ML systems to be part of the Inspiration and Entertainment mission to define, drive and develop capabilities for discovering engaging content. We are looking for an experienced data leader to collaborate closely with engineers, applied scientists, and the wider Search, Browse, Personalization & Recommendations organization.

WHAT WE'D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

1. Design, build, and maintain large-scale data intensive systems and services for generating and surfacing personalized content to customers that is tailored to their interest.
2. Ensure the implementation of a state-of-the-art software development methodology and cultivate best practices in software development. Operate a complex and advanced system landscape that meets the highest standards in terms of reliability, performance, and latency.
3. Develop new approaches to data storage, evaluation, ongoing maintenance, and best practices that will be useful across the entire company, including with structured and unstructured data.
4. Mentor junior to senior engineers and actively collaborate with other teams. Share knowledge and expertise within our talented engineering and science community.
5. Work closely with applied science and engineering leaders, product managers, designers and other business stakeholders to bring our state-of-the-art solutions to the customers and to discover and identify new opportunities.
6. As part of our Principal Engineering Community, collaborate with other senior individual contributors to set engineering standards, guide decision-making for the technology landscape at Zalando via our Tech Radar.

WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF YOU HAVE

1. Expertise in the design and development of resilient, scalable distributed systems in cloud infrastructure, with a preference for proficiency in Kubernetes and AWS.
2. In depth experience in developing data pipelines for batch and stream processing using AWS services, Databricks, Airflow, and similar technologies.
3. Excellent software engineering skills to design and implement effective solutions for data strategies in large-scale production environments (data engineering, data version control). You excel at and are enthusiastic about both delivering projects hands-on and leading development efforts.
4. Experience in making applications resilient and reliable through open tracing, monitoring, and load testing, with a deep understanding of monitoring and maintaining data pipelines.
5. Strong communication skills and experience leading organization-wide collaborations, with the ability and eagerness to understand the business context in which the team operates and the customer problems being solved.
6. Experience coaching and mentoring senior engineers, and collaborating closely with applied scientists, senior machine learning engineers, and data scientists.
7. A strong advocate for agile processes, operational excellence, and adherence to coding best practices, including clean code, readability.
