Jobbeschreibung

At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we'll give you what you need to make it happen. It won't always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you'll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to: Program Manager Solid State Transformer

Your role and responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Power Electronics Control SW R&D Engineer to be part of the expansion of our business with a novel solid state transformer technology for datacenter applications.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of the ELDS R&D center of excellence team for Solid State Transformer in charge of the design and development of the future Solid State Transformer products family with first focus on Data Center application requirements. In this context, and as part of the R&D SST development team, we are looking for a Senior / Principal R&D Power Electronics Control SW engineer with special focus on Power Electronics Control algorithms development and implementation, including close interaction with system design, control HW, testing, validation, productization and certification for the new ABB SST offering.

You will be part of advanced R&D activities in the field of power electronics for the ABB SST for Datacenter Products, in close cooperation with a highly qualified senior team of R&D engineers and scientists in a global and multicultural setup.

You will be mainly accountable for:
  • Designing control software architecture and design for power electronics systems, including layered architectures (hardware abstraction layers, middleware, application frameworks) and guiding design reviews.
  • Developing robust control strategies and reusable platforms for inverters, converters, and motor drives, supported by modeling and simulation (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) and validation before implementation.
  • Collaborating with cross‑functional stakeholders (program managers, product architects, research scientists) and hardware teams to integrate and test control software, ensuring safety and reliability (e.g., overcurrent, overvoltage, thermal protection) and compliance with industry standards.
  • Documenting high‑level designs, interface specifications, and architectural diagrams, while contributing to IP, standards activities, and the advancement of power electronics skills within the R&D team.
Qualifications for the role
  • You hold a Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and/or Control Systems, with a focus on high‑power and medium‑voltage power electronics converter systems.
  • You possess over 5 years of experience in real‑time control for power electronics, embedded software development and deployment, including skills in software architecture, development tools, and processes.
  • You are highly proficient in modeling and simulation of power electronics systems using modern tools, with MATLAB/Simulink as your preferred environment.
  • You have a keen interest in practical experimentation, testing, and validation in medium‑voltage environments, and experience in productization and certification of power electronic converters is a plus.
  • You are motivated, self‑organized, and engaged in applied research and development, thriving in a global, multidisciplinary R&D team.
  • You are fluent in English (written and spoken); German language skills are beneficial.
  • You are available for occasional travel.
