Embedded in the vibrant atmosphere of Münster with its high standard of living, the University’s diverse research profile and attractive study programmes draw students and researchers throughout Germany and from around the world.

The Department for Quantum Technology in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a

Postdoctoral research associate (Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in, salary level TV-L E 13)

for the externally funded project QuGrids (Quantum-based Energy Grids) at the earliest possible date. We are offering a fixed-term full-time position (100%) until 31 October 2026.

Your tasks:
  • Participation in research activities of Prof C Schuck’s group, including the planning and execution of independent scientific projects in the area of nanophotonics and quantum technology.
  • Play a leading role in coordinating, executing and developing collaborative research efforts towards realizing quantum technology solutions for energy systems and grid applications with group members, students, national and international partners in academia and industry.
  • Fabricate and characterize samples in chemical and physical processes; work in a clean room environment, including instrument and process manager tasks.
  • Construct and maintain laboratory setups and organization of daily group operations; work with lasers, electrical instruments, high-vacuum equipment, cryogenic environments, laboratory and experimental control systems.
Our expectations:
  • A master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering or a closely related field of study is required.
  • A doctorate in physics, electrical engineering or a closely related field of study is required.
  • Experience in photonics, quantum technology, semiconductor physics, nanophotonic design and characterization is indispensable.
  • Advanced knowledge in electromagnetic simulations, preferably MEEP and COMSOL, as well as knowledge in common high-level programming languages, preferably Python, is mandatory.
  • Experience with working in clean room environments is highly desired and familiarity with relevant nanofabrication methods, such as electron beam- or photolithography and characterisation of nanophotonic devices is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with project management and participation in third-party funded research projects is highly desirable.
  • Experience as a teaching assistant capable of supervision students is highly desirable.
  • You should be team-oriented, have good communication skills, organisational skills, scientific writing and presentation skills and the ability to work independently. German language skills are not a requirement, but a willingness to learn is desirable.
Advantages for you:
  • Appreciation, commitment, openness and respect – values which are important to us.
  • Our broad range of diverse work-time models offers great flexibility – also when working from home.
  • If you have family members or young children in your care, our Family Service Office offers concrete support to help you balance your private and professional responsibilities.
  • As an educational institution, we are deeply committed to offering occupational training and continuing education opportunities tailored to your individual needs.
  • From A – Z, Aikido to Zumba, our sport and health programmes ensure a healthy work-life balance.
  • As a university employee, you are entitled to numerous benefits afforded to public servants, e.g. an attractive company pension scheme (VBL), an annual end-of-year bonus and a position that is shielded from economic fluctuations.
