We seek to fill a postdoctoral position in the research group on Small-scale Dynamics in Turbulence led by Dr. Florencia Falkinhoff, in collaboration with Dr. Mohsen Bagheri and Prof. Dr. Eberhard Bodenschatz.

We are an international research institute conducting both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 300 people. We are part of the Göttingen Campus, a collaboration between the university and non-university research institutions. The Laboratory for Fluid Physics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity (LFPB), headed by Prof. Dr. Eberhard Bodenschatz, fosters a stimulating international research environment on active complex systems ranging from Biophysics to Fluid Dynamics.

The research

Understanding the individual and relative motion of particles is fundamental to understanding transport processes in complex flows. Large-scale transport in atmospheric flows is well understood and measured by monitoring stations and satellite observations. However, our knowledge of smaller scales, such as those ranging from 100 m to 50 km, and the associated concentration fluctuations is limited. Consider, for example, the transport of particles or tracers originating from the ground, such as the release of gases or aerosols, smoke from a fire, or particles blown into the atmosphere. In this context, we are planning a field campaign in which we will release several balloons simultaneously to investigate how the atmospheric boundary layer affects particle transport. To accomplish this, the successful candidate will design, carry out, and analyze field measurements.

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated early career researcher who is passionate about contributing to a better understanding of the complex physics of the atmosphere with a

  • PhD degree in physics, meteorology, engineering or related fields.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following: experimental fluid physics and dynamics, turbulence, atmospheric flows, meteorology.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, MATLAB or C++.
  • Ability and desire to work in a diverse and international team.
  • Good command of English. German language skills are not required.

Knowledge of instrument design, remote sensing or electronics is a big plus.

Our offer

We offer excellent working conditions in a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment. The position is for one year initially with the possibility of extension. Salary and working hours follow the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for scientists: Working hours are fulltime; salary is E13 TVöD-Bund. The starting date should be as soon as possible. The Max Planck Society is committed to achieving the highest level of excellence and diversity. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from women. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Your application

Please apply via our application portal, submitting a cover letter, a CV, and contact information for up to three references. Your cover letter should briefly describe your research interests, relevant experience and career goals. All applications received before July 15, 2025 will receive full consideration, but the position will remain open until filled.
