We are one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and one of the most important employers in our region. Our broad range of subjects, the dynamic development of our main research areas and our central location in Cologne make us attractive for students and researchers from around the world. We offer a wide range of career opportunities in science, technology, and administration.
Fluorescence microscopy is an integral part of modern biomedical research and development and is utilized to monitor and identify cells, cell components and microorganisms, but requires a complex optical setup, in particular using objectives with high numerical aperture and specialized colour filters, combined with a large footprint and high acquisition costs.
The aim of the BMBF-funded FluoPolar project at the Humboldt Centre for Nano- and Biophotonics is the realisation of a lens-free alternative to traditional fluorescence microscopy, where required optical components can be integrated directly on a camera chip, thus enabling the examination of biological samples in direct contact as lab-on-a-chip, utilizing newly developed polariton filters.
