ZABEL in Hamburg seeks a Platform Lead / System Architect to own the architecture of a sophisticated software platform spanning web apps, APIs, analytics, and services. You will enable cloud, on‑premise, offline, and restricted-network operations with high scalability and security, guiding a seasoned Platform and Backend engineering team.

Qualifikationen

• 8+ years in backend, platform, or software engineering.
• Senior technical role such as System Architect, Software Architect, Platform Architect, Tech Lead, or Principal Engineer.
• Strong expertise in distributed systems and cloud-native design.
• Hands-on with Kubernetes, container tech, CI/CD, and IaC.
• Solid understanding of cloud, on-prem, and hybrid infra.
• Experience designing APIs, event-driven architectures, multi-tenant platforms.
• Knowledge of IAM, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, RBAC, ABAC, Zero Trust, Secrets Management.
• Experience building highly available, scalable, observable systems.
• Experience with restricted networks (on-prem, air-gapped, etc.) is desirable.
• Proven technical leadership, mentoring, architecture/code/design reviews.
• Strategic yet hands-on approach to software engineering.
• Excellent English; German is a plus.
• EU or NATO citizenship is required.

As Platform Lead / System Architect, you will take ownership of the overall architecture of a sophisticated software platform comprising web applications, APIs, analytics capabilities, platform services, and integration components. The platform is designed to operate seamlessly across cloud, on-premise, offline, and restricted-network environments, requiring the highest standards of scalability, resilience, and security.

This is a key architectural role offering significant influence over the company's long-term technology strategy. You will work closely with Product Management, Engineering, and Security teams while providing technical leadership to an experienced team of Platform and Backend Engineers.

Your Profile

• At least 8 years of experience in backend, platform, or software engineering
• Proven experience in a senior technical role such as System Architect, Software Architect, Platform Architect, Tech Lead, or Principal Engineer
• Strong expertise in designing and implementing distributed systems and modern cloud-native architectures
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, container technologies, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code
• Solid understanding of cloud, on-premise, and hybrid infrastructure environments
• Extensive experience designing scalable APIs, event-driven architectures, and multi-tenant platforms
• Strong knowledge of modern security concepts, including Identity & Access Management, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, RBAC, ABAC, Zero Trust, Secrets Management, and secure platform design
• Experience building highly available, scalable, and observable systems
• Experience working with on-premise, edge, offline, air-gapped, or otherwise restricted network environments is highly desirable
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, and conduct architecture, code, and design reviews
• Strategic mindset combined with a pragmatic, hands-on approach to software engineering
• Excellent English communication skills; German is considered an advantage
• EU or NATO citizenship is required due to the nature of the customer environment

Nice to Have

• Experience within defence, public sector, aerospace, or other highly regulated industries
• Knowledge of security standards such as BSI Baseline Protection or equivalent frameworks
• Experience with learning platforms, analytics solutions, or device management systems
• Exposure to Unity, gaming backends, multiplayer infrastructure, or XR technologies
• Experience integrating software with hardware-based systems
• Familiarity with delivering software platforms across multiple deployment scenarios and operational environments
