Jobbeschreibung

Job Description

We are seeking a Physicist or Electrical Engineer (f/m/d) for the Institute for Astroparticle Physics (IAP) starting from 01.10.2025, limited to 3.5 years, for a 65% part-time position. To strengthen our KATRIN++ team, we are looking for motivated early-career scientists (f/m/d) eager to develop the next-generation experiment for the direct determination of neutrino mass. Our work combines fundamental research with cutting-edge technology, and we welcome creative minds who enjoy hands-on laboratory work and are driven by curiosity and commitment to advancing experimental methods.

Job responsibilities include:

  1. Characterizing Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters (MMCs) and other quantum sensors in external magnetic fields (up to 50 mT).
  2. Designing experimental setups for a 10 mK dilution refrigerator, performing measurements, and analyzing data.
  3. Modeling detector performance (timing and energy resolution), comparing simulations with experimental data, and extrapolating neutrino mass sensitivity in the context of quantum sensor arrays using a tritium source, similar to KATRIN.
  4. Participating in teaching and outreach activities.
  5. Possibility to pursue a doctorate alongside research work.

Personal qualifications:

  • Master's degree in physics or electrical engineering.
  • Strong expertise in quantum mechanics (mK) and quantum sensors is desirable.
  • Membership in the staff of Germany's only Excellence University conducting large-scale research.
  • Ability to work under excellent conditions in an international environment and engage in research and academic teaching.

We offer comprehensive training at the start, various qualification opportunities, flexible working models (flexitime, remote work), sports and leisure activities, child and holiday care services, and a EUR 25/month contribution to the Job Ticket Baden-Württemberg.

Our canteens provide a variety of dishes, snacks, and beverages. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, including recognized severely disabled persons.

Please apply online by 25.07.2025, using vacancy number 252/2025, directed to Ms. Silvia Ratzel at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Human Resources, Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Platz 1, 76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany.
