Job Description:
Job Description:

Are you up to discover and inspire advanced solutions for future 5G-6G Telecom Satellites? Do you want to be part of the group of leading experts in this field?

We look forward to you joining us as a PhD student (d/f/m) within Airbus Defence and Space, Telecom & Navigation Processing Germany for 35 hours/week, (flexi-time).

Location: Ottobrunn/Munich
Start: as soon as possible
Duration: 3 years

You will support the department Telecom & Navigation Processing Germany which specializes in high performance processing solutions for satellites. The R&T focus are satellite on-board future 5G/6G payloads as well as artificial intelligence support.

Your location
Our site is just a stone's throw away from Munich, the beautiful capital of Bavaria. Are you into sports and other outdoor activities? The Alps and Lake Starnberg are within an hour’s reach, offering a multitude of recreational options.

Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 35-hour week (flexitime).

International environment with the opportunity to network globally.

Work with modern/diversified technologies.

At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.

Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Scope of PhD thesis

5G is giving the convergence of terrestrial and satellite-based networks a major boost. Under the keyword "Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)", satellites are being consistently integrated into the mobile communications standard for the first time, subsequently paving the way for a global and dense communication network in the future 6G generation. Both sides benefit from this: not only does it mean terrestrial cellular networks can count on satellite support to overcome any range limitations, it also gives the satellite industry the opportunity to expand its offering of services far beyond the provision of satellite TV and internet. For example, the automotive industry and the Internet of Things benefit from seamless connectivity with NTN.

The PhD position will support the on-going R&D activities on on-board implementation and scaling of a gNodeB. The candidate shall research one or more of the following fields:

CU/DU (Centralized Unit / Distributed Unit) architectural trade-off and their impact on implementation, analyze which elements could/should remain on ground vs. on-board

Implementation and benchmarking of the selected gNodeB architecture on an on-board processor

Scalability of the gNode, resulting performance and impact on SWaP (size, weight and power), analyze max. network throughput and bottlenecks

Identify possible optimizations of the full 5G on-board processor, including digital beamformer and regenerative part. Assess possible impact on 5G signal of a fast flying low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite and define counter measures if needed.

gNodeB performance improvement capabilities through AI with regards to network orchestration and specifically RF signals

Extending the telecom node’s capability by edge computing capabilities, e.g. embedding AI based technologies

Assess most efficient architecture based on hardware realization on CPU vs. FPGA. vs. custom ASIC

Qualifications:

Master Degree in Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar field of study

Basic knowledge of communication standards (CCSDS, 3GPP, 5G)

Good signal processing background

Embedded programming skills (C, C++, VHDL)

First Experiences in inference of Neural Networks on embedded processing platforms (CPU, FPGA) would be an asset

Interest in spacecraft and new trends in telecommunications

Fluent English is mandatory; French or German would be an asset

Dynamic, proactive, engaging personality, organized with focus on delivery
