We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD student to conduct research at the interface of neuroscience and immunology.
The student will join the ‘Translational Neuroimmunology’ research group, led by Dr. Róisín McManus, based at the DZNE in Bonn, affiliated with the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of Excellence.
The research focuses on understanding how microglia-mediated neuroinflammation contributes to Alzheimer’s disease progression, examining immune signaling and metabolic changes that modulate microglial function and disease outcomes.
Recent work indicates that a western diet can induce lipid changes activating microglia and causing neuroinflammation. Using animal models, cell cultures, and patient samples, the PhD project aims to unravel innate immune pathways mediating these neuroinflammatory changes, contributing to Alzheimer’s disease understanding.
This position involves cell culture work with murine and human cells, immune activation assays, and advanced techniques (metabolic assays, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging, RNA sequencing, biochemical techniques like western blot). The successful candidate will assess the impact of western diet on microglial activity both in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro, employing diet treatments, pharmacological inhibition, and genetic approaches.
