Jobbeschreibung

PhD Student (f / m / d) in Advanced Methods for Sustainability Assessment of PV Systems
Kennziffer : SE / 16

At Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, we research materials and processes for next-generation solar cells. We aim to develop technologies with high stable efficiency, cost-effective, and resource-efficient production. One promising candidate is monolithic perovskite / silicon tandem solar cells, where we have achieved a world record efficiency of over 30% in the laboratory. We are also developing scalable processes for industry-relevant tandem solar cells and modules with high efficiency and long-term stability, partly with industry participation.

In the project DaTA, which focuses on data for technology assessment, we collect information to enable researchers to assess the sustainability of future energy system integration. To be a first user of the data bank under development and to enhance our research on life cycle assessments (LCAs) and techno-economic assessments, we are seeking a doctoral student.

You will be co-supervised by TU Munich and will engage with challenging tasks in a rapidly evolving field, working in a state-of-the-art facility as part of a highly motivated team. Your position is embedded in the InnoPool project DaTA, collaborating with research groups across several Helmholtz centres.

Your Tasks
  1. Develop methods for semi-automated generation of Lifecycle Inventory data based on a techno-economic database of PV technologies, e.g., using machine learning.
  2. Create test cases to validate the semi-automatically generated data.
  3. Develop methods and tools for model validation.
  4. Build your PhD thesis on existing student work concerning techno-economic assessment of AgriPV, systematically reviewing the state-of-the-art, formulating research questions, and conducting in-depth studies in consultation with supervisors and collaborators.
  5. Evaluate your own and others' studies, presenting results at project meetings.
  6. Publish findings in oral and written formats at conferences and in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Your Profile
  • Master's degree in information systems, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a similar field.
  • Experience in (multi-) energy systems or LCA / TEA studies.
  • Programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • High intercultural competence and ability to work as part of a team.
Your Benefits at HZB
  • Contribute to innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future, collaborating with leading international researchers.
  • Supportive environment promoting diversity and sustainability with inclusive working conditions, sustainable methods, and diversity sensitivity.
  • Networking opportunities, mentorship, and support from the HZB Graduate Centre and Postdoc Office.
  • Attractive remuneration based on the Public Service Wage Agreement (TVöD Bund).
  • 30 days holiday per year.
  • Additional benefits such as pension plans, transport subsidies, and sports programs.
  • Work-life balance with flexible working hours, part-time, and hybrid models.
  • Join a welcoming team!

Fixed-term contract for 48 months. Salary based on TVöD-Bund.
