Offer Description

Area of research: Promotion

Your Job:

The main objective of this PhD project is to understand the propulsion of trypanosomes in complex environments mimicking biological tissues. You will study their swimming behavior in soft tissue-like surroundings using established models. This project is part of the DFG-SPP 2332 'Physics of Parasitism' program, involving theoretical, simulation, and experimental work.

The key goals are:

  • To elucidate physical mechanisms governing trypanosome motility in dense suspensions of soft particles.
  • To characterize swimming through elastic networks with varying pore sizes and elastic properties.
  • To identify the limits of motility in soft tissue-like environments.
  • To publish and present findings in journals and at conferences.

Your Profile:

  • Master's degree in physics, biophysics, applied mathematics, chemistry, or engineering.
  • Motivation to study microswimmer motility and develop computational models.
  • Programming skills and experience with numerical modeling and particle-based methods.
  • Interest in collaboration with experimentalists.
  • Excellent English skills.
  • Experience with parallel programming (advantageous but not necessary).

Application should include CV, motivation letter, degrees, grades, and contact info of two references.

Our Offer:

Join an international team working on impactful issues, with excellent conditions for your PhD, including:

  • Cutting-edge computational facilities and collaboration with leading experimental groups.
  • 30 days annual leave plus additional days off.
  • Training and networking opportunities via JuDocS.
  • Support for international employees.
