Optical AIT Engineer (m/f/d)

Your Tasks

  • Develop optical alignment and test strategies for complete space instruments and subsystems such as telescopes and spectrometers
  • Define, negotiate, and align AIT plans and requirements with optical and system designers
  • Specify and procure specialized optical ground-support equipment (OGSE) such as test setup mechanisms (TSM)
  • Quantify the performance of optical AIT approaches through technical budgeting and analysis
  • Align and cooperate with other AIT disciplines (mechanical, electrical, and system engineering) to ensure seamless integration
  • Develop, plan, and document detailed cleanroom procedures for optical assembly, integration, and testing (OAIT)
  • Execute OAIT activities in cleanroom environments and at external test facilities
  • Present AIT results to project teams, customers, and stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with subcontractors and external test facilities to achieve mission success
Your Qualifications

  • University degree or PhD in Technical Optics, Physics, Space Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
    Strong expertise in optics and optical metrology, including:
    • Wavefront measurements, light sources, lasers, detectors, imaging systems, lenses, and mirrors across the ultraviolet to far-infrared spectrum
  • Experience with high-precision positioning systems (e.g., hexapods, precision stages)
  • Proficiency in numerical data handling & analysis and scripted automation of measurement setups (e.g., Python, MATLAB, EDEN)
Nice to have
  • Experience with optical and mechanical tolerance analysis
  • Proficiency in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, ASAP)
  • Knowledge of optical fabrication & coating technologies
  • Procurement experience for complex optical equipment, including cost and lead-time management
  • Familiarity with 3D metrology instruments and software (e.g., laser trackers, theodolites, CMM, Spatial Analyzer)
  • Good understanding of precision mechanics & mechanical drawings
  • Hands-on experience working in cleanrooms (ISO5 / Class 100) for optical integration
  • Experience leading a small technical team in an engineering environment (without disciplinary authority)
