Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Degree: Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Education: Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course.
  3. Certification: Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology, or completion of a formal ophthalmic training program of the United States Armed Forces preferred.
  4. Experience: Two years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after graduation. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certified before commencing services under this contract. U.S. Citizen must be able to obtain a proper background and child background investigation in a favorable status to meet security requirements. Possess knowledge of specialized medical terminology associated with Optometry and Ophthalmology.

Required Skills/Abilities
  1. Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification (i.e., COA, COT, or COMT).
  2. Perform vision screenings, obtain patient histories, prescription verification of eyeglasses and contact lenses, troubleshooting optical problems, and maintain patient records.
  3. Test far and near visual acuity, perform gross peripheral vision testing, evaluate depth perception, check pupils, perform color perception tests, and a gross external eye examination.
  4. Examine the eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
  5. Utilize autorefractor, non-contact tonometer, and lensometer.
  6. Operate specialized ophthalmic equipment; Pentacam, OCT, visual field, and anterior/posterior segment camera.
  7. Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  8. Measure intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
  9. Test field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and chart test results on graph paper.
  10. Measure axial length of eye, using ultrasound equipment.
  11. Provide rigid and soft contact lens insertion/removal classes and understand contact lens cleaning and storing procedures.
  12. Maintain effective communication with patients and staff and perform ocular triage for patients who call or walk in the clinic.
  13. Conduct basic maintenance on office equipment.
