About the Position:

The primary function of this position is to provide guidance and functional expertise to improve coding accuracy. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Qualifications:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience which includes:

1. Applying outpatient and inpatient coding principles;
2. Using medical terminology and clinical knowledge to assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes;
3. Coding complex records with oversight;
4. Performing quality control of medical records data;
5. Assisting in training clerical staff and coding trainees on the coding of medical records.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Inpatient coding experience highly preferred.

American Academy of Professional Coders - Certified Professional Coder (AAPC-CPC), Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Outpatient (CPC-H), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (AHIMA-RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) credentials highly
