Job Description:

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutes in the fields of III/V semiconductors and diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic and optoelectronic components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, health, energy and communication.

Diamond is not only known as a gemstone, but also for its extraordinary physical properties. These properties are used at the IAF to develop new types of quantum devices, for example quantum-sensors or quantum-computers. The prerequisite for this is a layer sequence of nitrogen-doped and intrinsic diamond layers with thicknesses in the nm range in order to introduce color centers into the crystal. As part of a master's thesis, a novel processing method for the production of extremely thin, so-called delta-doped diamond layers is therefore to be investigated. These delta-doped layers can be used in components for quantum technological applications. The colour centers produced by delta doping will then be examined and characterized in detail.

What you will do

  • Production of thin diamond layers in a reactor optimized for this purpose
  • Determination of the dopant concentration and characterization of the quantum properties of the color centers
  • Optimization of the process and investigation of the dependency regarding the growth position
  • Possibly: Investigation of applicability to other dopants

What you bring to the table

  • Master's degree in physics, materials science or a comparable subject area
  • Knowledge of materials science, crystallography, chemistry or solid-state physics
  • Good language skills in German and English
  • Enjoyment of experimental work
  • Ability to work in a team, openness and motivation for independent, goal-oriented work
