Strokes and other cardiovascular diseases are usually treated using endovascular therapy. This involves navigating thin, flexible catheters through the vascular system to the treatment site, where a clot is removed or a stent is placed, for example. The doctors monitor the position and movement of the catheters via the fluoroscopic image (live X-ray image). Recording the mechanical condition of the instruments during the procedure in a digital twin can help to make such interventions faster and safer by issuing warnings before vessels are damaged or recommending ideal navigation maneuvers. In the future, interventions can also be completely automated. The mechanical condition and, in particular, the contact forces between the catheter and the vessel wall can be determined from the deformation of the catheter, which is visible on the fluoroscopic image.

What you will do

The aim of this work is to develop a methodology to increase the accuracy of the digital twin by integrating additional information.

The work includes:
  1. Extensive literature research and concept development
  2. Implementation of the developed process
  3. Setting up and carrying out suitable test and validation trials in a test rig or simulation
  4. Documentation of the work results in a final thesis and presentation
What you bring to the table
  1. Sound basic knowledge of mechanics, mathematics and control engineering
  2. Good programming skills, ideally in Python
  3. Independent, thorough and systematic way of working
  4. Enjoy applied research and interdisciplinary work
  5. Completed Bachelor's degree in a STEM subject or completed major in the subject area
  6. Business fluent in German or English, basic knowledge of German
