Master's thesis - Development of a process for the additive manufacturing of components for fusion devices

1 day ago Be among the first 25 applicants

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) is one of the world's leading centers for fusion research. With around 1100 dedicated employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald, we are committed to exploring the fundamental principles of fusion power plants. These power plants generate energy without climate‑damaging emissions, are safe, sustainable and nearly limitless – just like the sun.

At the IPP site in Garching we are conducting research on the large‑scale experiment ASDEX Upgrade, a world‑famous tokamak type fusion plant.

Master’s student - mechanical, process or production engineering

  • Opportunity to submit an unsolicited application for writing a Master thesis at the IPP
  • The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) offers qualified young students the opportunity to write their Master thesis at the IPP in cooperation with a university
  • The topic of the thesis is “Development of a process for the additive manufacturing of components for fusion devices”
  • We are operating two large‑scale experiments in Germany: the IPP site in Garching with ASDEX Upgrade (tokamak) and the IPP site in Greifswald with Wendelstein 7‑X (stellarator)
  • This Master’s thesis is in the field of neutral beam injection (NBI). NBI is one of the most important heating devices for heating fusion plasma to over 100 million Kelvin.
  • On our website you can find more information about the specific ITER Technology & Diagnostics (ITED) division and our research topics in the Neutral Beam Injection Group (NBI).
  • Expertise is a plus, but an engineering or computer science background and passion for fusion research are enough to get started.

To be a Master Student with us means

  • You will be part of one of the largest scientific and technical projects in Germany with interdisciplinary project teams. You can expect exciting tasks and projects in an international scientific environment.
  • Master’s thesis contracts are temporary contracts limited to 1 year.
  • What can you further expect?
    • Flexible working hours
    • Free parking on the institute's premises
    • Canteen on the campus with a varied range of meals
    • Company health management for preventive healthcare
    • Various sports activities, groups and courses on the campus
    • Social counseling for support in difficult life and work situations
  • The IPP is a member of the multinational programme European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics for coordinating training in fusion research and technology throughout Europe.
  • Here you can find further information about living and working in Germany.

We value a fair, diverse and inclusive work environment. We welcome applications from all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, social, ethical or religious background. We aim to increase the representation of women in areas where they are underrepresented and encourage them to apply. We also support the hiring of people with disabilities and invite them to apply.
