DESCRIPTION

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the pioneer and recognized leader in Cloud Computing. Millions of businesses in 150+ countries, from start-ups to Fortune 500 enterprises, across all industries including public sector, run their operations and applications on AWS to create new revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and reduce business risks.
In 2025, we will launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new, independent cloud for Europe, designed to help public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries meet their evolving sovereignty needs. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will provide customers the capability to meet stringent operational autonomy and data residency requirements.
Currently we are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as AWS Director and Managing Director of AWS European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) GmbH, driving our ambitious €7.8 billion investment in European digital sovereignty, coupled with a leading role in AWS worldwide digital sovereignty efforts. This pivotal role will shape the future of cloud computing in Europe while ensuring AWS maintains its position as the most trusted cloud provider for government, healthcare, highly regulated industries, and critical infrastructure operators across Europe.
Impact Level: This role directly influences AWS's success in the €140B+ European cloud market and helps to shape the future of digital sovereignty in Europe. The position requires exceptional leadership capabilities, political acumen, and technical credibility to compete effectively with national sovereign cloud initiatives while building trust with European stakeholders.
This role is based in Germany.

Key Responsibilities

1. Serve as the Operational Leader and Legal Representative of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud GmbH, accountable for:
1. Drive planning and execution of AWS's sovereign cloud initiatives across the EU.
2. Lead high-stakes engagements with ministerial-level government officials and C-suite executives.
3. Oversee compliance needs for national security schemes and certification requirements.
4. Direct technical business development strategy aligned with European sovereignty requirements.
5. Own delivery to the European Sovereign Cloud Business P&L.
6. Build and maintain strategic partnerships with key European stakeholders.
7. Ensure operational independence and compliance with EU data residency requirements.
2. Serve as the Global Leader for AWS digital sovereignty solutions in our AWS commercial regions worldwide, accountable for:
1. Execute AWS's worldwide digital sovereignty strategy and positioning.
2. Collaborate with AWS worldwide sales leaders to meet evolving worldwide customer requirements for digital sovereignty.
3. Work with AWS product management and services leadership to respond to customer needs.
4. Create scalable, programmatic approaches to meeting varying national digital sovereignty requirements.

1. Substantial executive-level leadership experience in European technology business development.
2. Proven track record of P&L management at scale.
3. Extensive experience engaging with C-suite executives and government officials.
4. Fluency in English; additional European languages preferred.
5. EU citizenship and residency required.
6. Deep understanding of European regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.
7. Track record of successful large-scale technology implementations in regulated industries and government.

1. Fluency in German.
2. Experience in national security, defense, or critical infrastructure sectors.
3. Strong background in cloud computing or enterprise technology.
4. History of successful public-private partnership development.
5. Advanced degree in relevant field (Business, Technology, Law).
6. Demonstrated success in policy advocacy and stakeholder management.
