Major Function

The TCC William D. Law Learning Commons is seeking a Mathematics Specialist to join our team! The Learning Commons Specialist (Mathematics) is primarily responsible for instructing and providing learning assistance and tutoring support to individual students and groups, and working with faculty across divisions to develop programs, resources, materials, and projects.

• Instructing and providing learning assistance to individual students and groups.
• Working with faculty across divisions to develop programs, resources, materials, and projects.
• Conducting class visits, orientations, and tours for classes and other groups.
• Serving on Learning Commons committees and other campus committees.
• Mentoring OPS tutors and participating in tutor training processes.
• Providing academic support services to specific student populations such as Veterans, STEM students, online learners, dual enrollment students, athletes, etc.

Minimum Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a discipline related to the responsibilities, including but not limited to mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, or computer science. Also requires two years of experience in learning assistance and/or teaching.

Successful Applicants Will Demonstrate:

• Strong knowledge of mathematics skills from basic math through college algebra.
• Knowledge of best practices in Learning Assistance and Mathematics Education.
• Knowledge of components of TCC's courses across the curriculum.
• Knowledge of word processing programs, website functions, online student record-keeping, online tutoring, and computer-assisted learning programs.
• Skills in assessing learning needs and developing individual learning plans.
• Skills in designing instructional materials and developing group presentations.
• Effective communication skills with faculty and students.
• Proficiency in using online student record-keeping systems and working with distance learning students.
• Ability to critically evaluate student work, identify issues, and implement corrective strategies.
• Ability to develop and conduct workshops and organize tutoring resources.
• Ability to work cooperatively and independently, supporting diverse student populations.
• Effective spoken and written communication in English.
• Ability to oversee part-time staff and support online homework and multimedia tools.
