Jobbeschreibung

In this position, you will execute research and development projects to address modern power grid issues involving growing DERs, EVs, and smart loads. The Lead Engineer, Energy Systems, will report to the Regional Team Lead at Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn and help identify key technical gaps, influencing the technology roadmap for Eaton's power systems products and services. This work will help businesses across Eaton solve critical problems and uncover new opportunities.

Further goals and responsibilities include:

  1. Develop, implement, and demonstrate solutions and technologies for energy system applications, including DER management, DC distribution, EVCI, advanced grid management, grid connectivity, and digitalization. This involves developing digital twins, advanced control, optimization, protection algorithms, and real-time simulation frameworks.
  2. Develop, implement, and validate flexibility, ancillary services, and optimization algorithms for power system operation and planning.
  3. Serve as a technical or project lead in technology development and demonstration projects.
  4. Stay current with research trends and technologies, applying knowledge in government-funded projects.
  5. Innovate and challenge state-of-the-art design and processes by securing patents and publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:

  1. PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or close to graduation, from an accredited institution. Alternatively, a Master’s degree with significant experience.
  2. PhD plus 3 years or Master’s plus 5 years of progressive experience in developing high-quality technology solutions.
  3. Strong experience in areas such as DER/EV management, EV charging infrastructure, grid automation, microgrid control, or related fields.
  4. Expertise in integrating generation and storage technologies into demonstration sites.
  5. Experience with advanced data analytics, control, reinforcement learning, and AI applications in energy systems.
  6. Proficiency with power system simulation software like MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD.
  7. Experience with real-time simulation hardware-in-the-loop, such as OpalRT RTDS or Typhoon HIL.
  8. Knowledge of predictive maintenance algorithms and AI for energy management.
  9. Hands-on experience with field or lab testing of energy systems components.
  10. Full professional proficiency in English; proficiency in German is highly desirable.

Skills to be evaluated:

  1. Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, TCP/IP, MQTT.
  2. Programming skills in Python and C++ are a plus.
