Lead Engineer - Energy Systems

Location: Aachen/Bonn, Germany

About the research and the project:

In this position, you will execute research and development projects to address modern power grid issues with growing DERs, EVs, and smart loads. The Lead Engineer Energy Systems will report to the Regional Team Lead at Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn, helping identify key technical gaps and influence the technology roadmap for Eaton's power systems products and services. This work aims to solve critical business problems and uncover new opportunities across Eaton.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and demonstrate solutions for energy system applications, including DER management, DC Distribution, EVCI, advanced grid management, grid connectivity, and digitalization. Focus on digital twins, advanced control, optimization, and protection algorithms, as well as real-time simulation frameworks.
  • Develop and validate flexibility, ancillary services, and optimization algorithms for power system operation and planning.
  • Lead technology development and demonstration projects as a technical or project lead.
  • Stay current with research trends and apply knowledge to government-funded projects.
  • Innovate and secure intellectual property through patents and publications.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field, or PhD candidate close to graduation; or Master’s degree with relevant experience.
  • Experience in DER/EV management, EV charging infrastructure, energy management systems, grid automation, or microgrid control.
  • Proficiency in power systems simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink or PSCAD.
  • Experience with real-time simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, and power hardware-in-the-loop systems.
  • Knowledge of AI applications, predictive maintenance algorithms, and field testing of energy systems.
  • Full professional proficiency in English; German language skills are highly desirable.
Skills to be evaluated:
  • Experience with communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, TCP/IP, MQTT).
  • Programming skills in Python and C++ are advantageous.
