We are Europe's flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry, and computer science. We are an international, innovative, and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble, and Rome. Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students, and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
You will participate in local Linux and network infrastructure installation, maintenance, and support as well as contribute to a number of key Linux (e.g. authentication, monitoring) email, and/or network (e.g. VPN, firewall) based services. The IT team collaborates actively with the pan European EMBL IT teams.
Your role within the IT Team will include the following responsibilities:
- Prepare, install and maintain network services (switching, VPN, firewall systems);
- Identify improvement points in the current networking IT service infrastructure and propose/implement solutions;
- Prepare, install and maintain high availability computer services primarily based on Linux;
- Prepare, install and maintain Linux desktop/laptop systems;
- Identify improvement points in the current Linux IT service infrastructure and propose/implement solutions;
- Provide excellent and user-friendly support for our internal and external Users;
- For short periods (e.g. vacations), contribute to any other Computer and Network team sysadmin tasks.
Minimum Requirements:
- Candidates must hold a BSc or MSc in Computer Science, or equivalent qualifications, and prior experience in the same line of work.
- In-depth technical experience with network systems (switches/firewalls/VPN);
- In-depth technical experience with Linux systems;
- Programming and scripting ability such as Python or bash;
- Strong, independent problem-solving abilities;
- Intermediate to advanced verbal and written communication in English;
- Aptitude to produce and maintain reliable and documented work;
- Strong ability to communicate and to work effectively in a team;
- Balanced interest in open source as well as proprietary technologies.
- Candidates with short or average experience with the system administration field but who are at ease with its concepts and techniques are welcome to apply as well.
You may also have:
- Knowledge of authentication technologies such as LDAP, OIDC/SAML;
- Skills with tools such as Ansible, server virtualization (Proxmox);
- Good knowledge of French.
