The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.

ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA. On Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

For its IT Department in the IT Group in Chile, within the Directorate of Engineering, ESO is advertising a Local Staff Member position of:

We are looking for an IT Specialist, providing expertise to ESO Projects, programmes and collaborations, all this ensuring the continuous operation of our systems environment, including the observatory sites and their connectivity with our sites in Santiago, Chile and Munich, Germany.

The IT Department at ESO has a team of specialists from multiple countries, performing its work in a real international environment, you will have the opportunity to integrate into this team, and evolve with the evolution of technologies to support the most advanced and ambitious astronomy initiatives in the world, among them ESO Paranal, ESO ELT and multiple collaboration projects with institutions from all over the world.

The IT Specialist for Databases and Operations is part of the IT Operations Chile Group working in close collaboration with the La Silla Paranal Observatory Departments, the IT Group in Garching, and external service providers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, implement, manage, and support the IT infrastructure for Science Operations at the ESO Observatories in Chile. This includes responsibilities such as system monitoring, backup and recovery, and operational continuity for databases (e.g. SAP ASE, Couchbase, and other non-relational databases) and Linux-based operating systems.
  • Together with the IT Operations Group in Germany, maintain the operation of the databases in the observatory sites in Chile, contribute to the troubleshooting of Operational Software issues and monitor the transfer of ESO Data Products to the ESO Archive in Germany.
  • Analyse in detail the operational environments and discover and troubleshoot complex application issues without impacting daily operations.
  • Contribute to the administration and configuration of Servers used for databases and Science Operations software.
  • Support the automation of the administration and monitoring of the infrastructure for Science Operations.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, operate and manage scripts (Python, Bash) to support science operations.
  • Continuous improvement: Identify and document user requirements and collaborate with your colleagues to propose and provide solutions for these requirements.

The position will be focused on the following technical experience and skills:

  • Database Administration and Monitoring, including the identification and troubleshooting of performance issues derived from the use of Science Operations software. ESO currently uses SAP ASE, Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL and Couchbase databases. Additionally, ESO uses database replication solutions to maintain copies of its operational databases in all observatory and archiving sites.
  • Experience in the administration and configuration of Linux Servers for databases.
  • Experience using and understanding the configuration of automation software based on the use of Gitlab.
  • Understanding container-based environments to run operational software.
  • Capability to perform hardware or virtual environment sizing for the deployment of database-based solutions.

Additionally, the selected candidate will be responsible for guiding and overseeing the work of IT Service Provision Contract. The service provider is implementing and supporting of the involved technologies in a 24x7 service scheme.

Reports to:

Head of IT Operations Chile Group of the Information Technology Department within the Directorate of Engineering.

Key competences and Experience:
  • At least three years of experience in the field, specifically in database and custom-made software administration and management.
  • Certified in a database such as Oracle, Couchbase or MS SQL Server.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and monitoring databases and software running on Linux operational environments.
  • Scripting in Python and Bash.
  • Delegating tasks, support and troubleshooting to IT Service Providers
  • Service oriented attitude, excellent communication skills and aptitude for working in a multi-cultural team are essential.
  • A good command of English language (most internal meetings are performed in English) as well as good English documentation skills are required.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Gitlab, Ansible and other automation tools.
  • Containers, in particular Docker and Kubernetes both in on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Preparation and management of maintenance contracts and hardware provision contracts.
Qualifications:
  • University degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Database certification.
  • ITIL certification will be desirable.
Language Skills:

ESO is an international organization where the official language is English. The position requires proficiency in oral and written communication in English.

We offer an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary and educational benefits, as well as financial help in relocating the candidate's family, where applicable. The initial contract is for a two-year term subject to medical clearance and successful completion of the probation period with a possibility of indefinite extension following the two years. The title or grade may be subject to change according to qualification and the number of years of experience.

ESO premises in Vitacura, Santiago de Chile. The working schedule will be 75% in Vitacura, with 5x2 shifts, and 25% at the Observatory sites with 5x2 shifts. Occasional travel to the ESO Headquarters in Germany may be required.
