The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering teaching in our Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses, with a focal emphasis on foundational and advanced topics in IT and information security. Alongside your colleagues, you will share the delivery of lectures and classes in basic aspects of the topic, such as operating systems and/or computer networks, and may be asked to teach classes in fundamentals of computer science or distributed systems. Your role will further encompass creating and updating content for existing modules, designing and planning new modules, and implementing innovative teaching methods.
Your research will entail initiating and leading on innovative projects with a specific emphasis on real-world applications. You will place emphasis on driving interdisciplinary collaboration and forging close links with organisations in research and industry, with the aim of ensuring your research remains highly relevant to the challenges currently facing applied IT and information security, in compliance with data protection standards.
Your career to date should include a demonstrable track record of strong performance in at least one of the following areas:
- Design, architecture and implementation of security systems and solutions
- Developing secure network protocols/applications
- Successful work within or with interdisciplinary teams and with expert specialists, integrating IT or information security in a range of areas of application in compliance with data protection requirements.

The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of fundamental issues in computer science and of up-to-date methods in IT/information security and related disciplines.
We expect applicants to have knowledge and experience in areas such as:
- Communications security: encryption in applications and protocols
- Security of operating systems: reference monitor, trusted computing, etc.
- Network security: use and architecture of firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection, honeypots, etc.
- Experience in the application of IT-Grundschutz/the ISO 2700x standards
- Experience with interfaces to business continuity, crisis management and risk analysis, including pen testing
Knowledge and experience in the following and/or similar fields will be desirable:
- Research expertise: Demonstrable contributions to research in relevant areas and publications in respected scientific journals/papers at significant conferences; your research should have contributed to the advancement of research fields in IT/information security.
- Research projects: Successful initiation, management and realisation of research projects in the area of IT/information security; ideally, you will have successfully acquired third-party funding for these projects.
- Development of innovative methodologies: Active involvement in developing innovative research methods and technologies in the context of IT/information security.
- Collaboration: Experience in successful collaboration with other research institutions, industrial businesses and relevant actors in the pursuit of shared research objectives.
- Academic networks: Forging and maintaining national and international academic networks for the purpose of promoting collaboration and communication among researchers.
General skills and experience in teaching are essential; if you are invited to interview, you will be expected to give a trial lecture.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in teaching and curricular development in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses that the new Faculty of Computer Science and Digital Society will offer. The impact of your teaching and research will help raise the profile of the new Faculty of Computer Science and Digital Society and set one of its scientific foci; you will also contribute to the active acquisition of third-party funding. We are looking to drive internationalisation forward at HAW Hamburg, and as such are seeking to recruit academic staff who can deliver teaching also in English. The successful candidate will also be willing to engage actively in HAW Hamburg’s self-administration.
For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.
This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.
The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.
As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.
Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 52 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.
