About the Position: Serve as the Patient Safety Manager with responsibility for implementing patient safety policies and activities developed by the Military Health System Patient Safety Program. Develop and implement the Patient Safety Program systems, and promote a culture of safety for patients in all healthcare settings.

Duties
  • Serve as the Medical Facility expert on patient safety.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and manage the Patient Safety Program.
  • Serve as liaison between nursing, pharmacy, and the medical staff to ensure safe/standardized medication practices.
  • Provide expertise and guidance to staff members in the areas of risk assessment and development, infection control and evaluation of patient safety action plans.
  • Perform staff support work in short and long-range planning efforts.
  • Advise and assist in the planning, development and operation of the hospital safety program.
  • Provide support to staff that ensures effective management of the facility's patient safety program.
  • Receive and review potential patient safety events from all sections of the Medical Treatment Facility.

Requirements
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel approximately 5% of the time away from your permanent duty station.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: assisting with developing, implementing and/or monitoring processes to improve the safety of patients; providing expertise and guidance to healthcare staff in the areas of risk assessment, risk analysis, and evaluation of patient safety action plans; and planning data collection methodologies to support clinical improvement initiatives. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in hospital administration, public health administration, or related fields such as business or public administration with course work in health care administration.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
