About the Role
We’re seeking a hands-on Head of Engineering with exceptional architectural skills and a strong vision for the AI-powered future. You’ll lead our engineering organisation, define our technology strategy, and prepare our platform to scale globally. You will work closely with our Engineering Managers to build a high-performing, resilient, and innovative engineering culture. Reporting directly to the C-level team, you will shape how ablefy builds, innovates, and delivers.
What You’ll Do
Leadership & Strategy
- Revisit and execute ablefy’s technology strategy and roadmap to align with business goals.
- Drive the exploration, evaluation, and integration of future AI capabilities into our product and technology stack, staying ahead of industry trends.
- Drive the evaluation and integration of AI capabilities not only in our products, but also across our engineering workflows, to accelerate development speed, improve code quality, and optimize testing processes.
- Create an organizational design that is ready to scale on agile principles and enables multiple teams and locations.
- Establish and maintain technical management disciplines and a technical roadmap that achieves a pragmatic balance between business process harmonization, time-to-value, and innovation, including best practices for AI integration and data pipelines.
- Work closely with Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, and Product to maintain effective team processes, prioritize backlogs, define short-term and long-term goals, and ensure clear communication with all stakeholders.
Team Management & Development
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of 20+ engineers, including 3 Engineering Managers and 2 Staff Engineers, fostering continuous learning and high performance.
- Coach and mentor Engineering Managers to empower them as effective team leads and support their professional growth.
- Collaborate with C-level and People teams to build and scale a world-class engineering organization.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, address underperformance, recognize individual strengths, and support career development.
- Act as a hands-on problem solver, maximizing delivery quality, teamwork, and productivity.
- Engage effectively with distributed teams while enjoying our vibrant Berlin office environment.
Technical Oversight & Architecture
- Provide architectural leadership and hands-on guidance to ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
- Bring expertise in Ruby on Rails (must-have) and ReactJS (strong plus), with excitement for AI/ML technologies.
- Champion best practices for AI integration, data pipelines, security, and infrastructure.
- Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies that improve development workflows and product capabilities.
Operational Excellence
- Manage the overall cost and performance of ablefy’s technology capabilities, infrastructure, cloud operations, and security.
- Own engineering OKRs and drive agile delivery practices.
- Oversee IT service management functions and ensure high availability and continuous integration & deployment.
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years in a similar leadership role (international experience preferred; experience in a fast-moving B2B SaaS environment is a plus)
- Deep understanding of AI/ML technologies and their strategic applications in SaaS products.
- Proven experience with Ruby on Rails; ReactJS experience strongly preferred.
- Expertise in agile methodologies (Kanban/SCRUM).
- Experience designing scalable, secure software architectures.
- Strong background in spatial or big data processing and data pipelines for AI/ML.
- Proven track record of building and coaching high-performing teams (20+ engineers).
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and risk management skills.
- Independent, self-driven leadership style with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
- Upper-Intermediate English (written & spoken); German fluency is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent preferred.
