Group Leader (f/m/d) for Scientific IT Consulting on HPC, AI and Data Science („SITCon” = Scientific IT Consultation & Development)

As part of their long-term strategic partnership, HZB and the Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB) aim to provide researchers with access to advanced computing infrastructure, data-driven methods, and machine learning. A new Joint Lab focusing on AI-supported simulation, data science, and HPC technologies will support materials research. Additionally, a central competence team will assist researchers and IT specialists in best practices for research data management and reuse.

We seek an enthusiastic individual with interdisciplinary skills to lead this expanding team. The team's consulting services will cover:

  • Development of AI-supported systems for literature research and analysis
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Data visualization and summarization
  • Modeling and simulation of experimental setups
  • Identifying research gaps
  • Implementing KPIs
  • Autonomous experiments in multimodal environments
  • FAIR data practices

The team will focus on designing, developing, and applying HPC and AI research tools, supporting infrastructure acquisition and setup. Services range from simple image analysis to complex big data HPC applications.

Your Tasks
  • Analyze existing data processes at HZB, starting with BESSY II, and develop standards.
  • Advise researchers on using ZIB's infrastructure, including storage systems and web portals.
  • Implement an integrated software environment with standardized data formats and automated metadata collection. Train researchers on tools like JupyterHub, pyAT, DAWN, PyFAI, etc.
  • Support the transition to HZB's new computing center, including AI and resource management systems.
  • Develop and execute training and support programs, ensuring effective use of infrastructure, and produce comprehensive documentation and tutorials.
Your Profile
  • PhD in natural sciences or data science, with postdoctoral experience preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of measurement, analysis methods, and imaging techniques.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary data science, programming, and web applications.
  • Knowledge of AI model training, data processing, and cloud storage solutions.
  • Proven publication and presentation record, with skills in LaTeX, PowerPoint, Excel, Word.
  • Experience in creating IT documentation and training materials is advantageous.
  • Excellent English skills, teamwork, leadership, and management abilities.
