Our Group Legal & Governance function plays a vital role in empowering the business with pragmatic, balanced compliance frameworks that protect our interests while supporting creativity and entrepreneurial freedom.

As part of this team, the Group Data Protection Counsel will report directly to the Group Compliance and Data Protection Director and serve as a key driver of our privacy and data governance efforts across the organisation.

About the Role
As Group Data Protection Counsel, you will act as the independent Data Protection Officer (DPO) for specific group entities, including Publishing and Digital units in Germany. You will be responsible for building and overseeing the Data Protection Management System (DPMS), advising on data privacy matters across international operations, and leading key group-wide initiatives that support our compliance with GDPR and broader privacy regulations.

Location – Hamburg, Germany – Hybrid (3 days/week in office)

Your Responsibilities:

• Serve as DPO for selected German group companies.
• Design, implement, and maintain the Data Protection Management System (DPMS) and related local and group policies.
• Deliver data protection training to employees and Data Protection Coordinators and coordinate with internal DPOs across the group.
• Advise on privacy-related matters in commercial contracts and data processing activities.
• Assess new group wide tools and data processing and counsel on data protection relevant measures like Privacy Impact Assessments, Legitimate Interest Assessments, Transfer Impact Assessments, Privacy Notices and Processing Activities
• Lead the Group Data Protection Practice Group, ensuring alignment and knowledge-sharing across our international DPO network.
• Benchmark data protection maturity levels and technical & organisational measures (TOMs) across the organisation.
• Contribute to data governance and digital transformation projects across the Bauer Media Group.

Your Profile:

• Fully qualified German lawyer (Volljurist, 1. & 2. Staatsexamen) with a minimum of 3 years’ post-qualification experience.
• Strong expertise in GDPR and data protection law, ideally with experience as a DPO.
• Demonstrated experience implementing or managing a DPMS in a complex organisation.
• Solid understanding of IT systems, digital marketing practices, and information security.
• Prior in-house experience in the media, digital, or entertainment sector is highly desirable.
• Fluent in both German and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
