Zalando SE in Erfurt is seeking a Fullstack Software Engineer for the Automation Core team in Tech Logistics. You will help build a high-performance, auto-scaling warehouse software system and integrate automated devices with the Zalando warehouse management platform.

You’ll work with Java/Spring Boot on the backend and Vue.js on the frontend, focusing on reliable RESTful services, data management with PostgreSQL, and event-driven patterns using Kafka.

Qualifications

• Backend Foundations: Solid hands-on experience with Java and the Spring Boot framework.
• Frontend Foundations: Experience building web apps with Vue.js and Node.js.
• Service Architecture: RESTful APIs within a microservices setup.
• Data Management: Relational DBs, notably PostgreSQL.
• Distributed Tech: Interest in or experience with Kafka and EDA.
• AI Tooling: Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools.
• Infra & Quality: Docker, CI/CD, cloud environments; Kubernetes welcome.
• Soft Skills: Pragmatic problem solving and clear communication in an international team.

Responsibilities

• Contribute across the full software lifecycle in an agile environment.

**Looking to work on a job that has a meaningful impact on millions of customers? Join our Tech Logistics "Automation Core" Engineering team as a Fullstack Software Engineer and help us deliver a high-performance, stable, auto-scaling software system that directly impacts our customers’ happiness.

The Tech Logistics Automation Core team is responsible for integrating automated devices and external hardware systems into the large Zalando warehouse management system and its processes. For example, we connect large conveyor systems, integrate item and parcel sorters, and steer transport robots to process customer orders efficiently.

Part of these integrations include tools and operational workflows to monitor production services and guarantee high availability to our users and stakeholders across Zalando logistics centers. Through these integrations, the team directly drives our Fulfillment Capabilities customer promise: ensuring customers enjoy the widest relevant assortment with the fastest, most reliable delivery.

As a member of our team, you will contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of our next-generation warehouse management system. You will collaborate with experienced engineers and cross-functional partners to build reliable solutions for managing orders, physical entities, and automated workflows within our fulfillment centers.

We solve problems that matter to the customer and the business. Our product organization is embedded directly in the team, enabling us to design, measure, and iterate on meaningful features with short feedback loops.

Our domain is deep and complex; we focus on long-term growth and support each team member through structured onboarding and collaborative engineering practices. You will learn new technologies, tackle real-world distributed challenges, and work on code designed to operate reliably at scale.

The team is based in Erfurt. We practice a flexible hybrid work model and collaborate closely with colleagues across Berlin and other European tech hubs.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOIN**G)

• Contribute across the entire software lifecycle: Actively participate in requirements refinement, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational monitoring in an agile environment.
• Build reliable integrations: Implement and maintain robust services that bridge physical automation equipment with core warehouse business logic.
• Write maintainable quality code: Write clean, testable, and well-documented software following team standards, API-first principles, and modern engineering practices.
• Leverage modern engineering tooling: Use modern developer tooling—including AI coding assistants—to streamline development, test authoring, and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate and learn: Participate in constructive code reviews, share knowledge within the team, and collaborate with Product Managers and Senior Engineers to deliver pragmatic solutions.
• Work fullstack with backend emphasis: Dedicate approximately 80% of your time to backend engineering and 20% to frontend interfaces and internal operator tooling.
• Support and incident handling: Participate in operational support, monitoring, and incident handling for our owned production services to ensure high availability and smooth warehouse operations.

• Backend Foundations: Solid hands-on experience with Java and the Spring Boot framework.
• Frontend Basics: Practical experience building web applications using Vue.js, Node.js, and modern JavaScript.
• Service Architecture: Working experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs within a microservices architecture.
• Data Management: Practical knowledge of Relational Databases (e.g., PostgreSQL);
• Distributed Concepts: Foundational understanding of or high interest in Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) and cloud-based message queuing systems (e.g., Kafka).
• AI & Modern Developer Tooling: Basic knowledge and practical usage of AI-assisted software development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, modern IDE assistants, or LLM-based developer tools) to assist in coding, testing, and debugging workflows.
• Infrastructure Familiarity: Basic experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud environments; exposure to Kubernetes is a welcome bonus.
• Testing & Quality: Consistent application of testing methods (unit, integration, contract testing) to ensure service stability.
• Mindset & Communication: A pragmatic problem-solving attitude, strong analytical reasoning, and comfortable communicating technical details within an international, cross-functional team.
