Jobbeschreibung

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching. Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences.

The Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Anatomy, invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3)
of Anatomy and Tissue Regeneration (Chair)

commencing as soon as possible.

The professorship represents the subject of brain regeneration and anatomy in research and teaching in its entire width. Until the anticipated retirement of the current holder of the Chair of Anatomy III – Cell Biology (Prof. Dr. Michael Kiebler) in 2031, the chair will be administered collegially, after which leadership will be assumed by the succeeding chairholder. With this appointment, the existing neuroscientific focus areas at LMU Munich are intended to be further strengthened and complemented – particularly in the research of regenerative processes and the mechanisms of neural plasticity.

Understanding inflammatory responses after brain injury is critical for developing effective regenerative and replacement strategies in a variety of mechanical injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the professorship is expected to focus on neuronal regeneration and its underlying plasticity during regeneration or the role of glial cells in the repair of brain pathologies. Ideally, the professorship should cover broad aspects of neuronal and glial biology, including the role of glial cells and their interactions during CNS regeneration.

The chair makes important contributions to the organization and development of the Institute of Anatomy and is involved in the Biomedical Center (BMC). Therefore, close cooperation with the other chair holders at the Institute of Anatomy, with the working groups at the BMC and the Faculty of Medicine is expected.

Candidates are expected to have an excellent research profile, several years of experience in neurobiological research at international institutions, the ability to establish an innovative brain regeneration research program and acquire substantial national and international funding, experience as reviewer of national and international grant programs, and a strong commitment to excellence in university teaching.

Prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification, teaching skills at university level, excellent academic achievements and a productive and promising research program.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members.

Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.

Please submit your application (curriculum vitae, scientific career, references, certificates, a list of publications and lectures, external funds) as well as a short application form (see https://www.med.lmu.de/en/academic-career/professorship/) to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Bavariaring 19, 80336 Munich, Germany, no later than September 11th, 2025.
