Job summary

Air Apps seeks a Financial Controller to lead financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting operations. You will review closings, support budgeting and forecasting, and ensure tax compliance in a fast‑growing, global startup environment.

This fully onsite role is based at our Lisbon office, with relocation support considered. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to drive accuracy, efficiency, and strategic financial decision‑making.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in accounting, controlling, or financial management.
• Senior audit position or Big 4 experience valued.
• Degree in Accounting, Management, Finance, or related field (Bachelor’s or Master’s).
• Chartered Accountant qualification is a strong plus.
• Solid understanding of accounting standards, financial statements, and tax regulations.
• Experience with ERP/finance tools: Excel, Netsuite, Payhawk, Ramp, Oracle or SAGE.
• Fluent in English, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, control and report financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting across departments and product lines.
• Review monthly, quarterly, and annual closings and reporting.
• Oversee internal control systems and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to align financial reporting with business goals.
• Manage cash flow, cost control, and ad hoc financial risk assessments.
• Automate ERP and accounting tools for efficiency (Netsuite, Payhawk, Ramp).
• Analyze variances and report on financial performance metrics.
• Contribute to business planning with financial insights.
• Continuously improve financial processes and controls for scalability.

The Role

As a Financial Controller, you will be a key member of our finance team, taking ownership of financial reporting, internal controls and overall accounting operations. This role is essential for delivering accurate, timely, and meaningful financial information that supports strategic decision‑making. You will review financial operations, participate in budgeting and forecasting activities, and compliance processes to ensure our continued growth, finance control and operational efficiency. This role blends strategic thinking with hands‑on execution, accountability and will play a crucial part in our decision‑making processes.

• This is a fully onsite position, based at our office in Lisbon, where you will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams in person and contribute to a dynamic and fast‑paced environment. We are open to support with relocation efforts.

• Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closings and reporting.
• Oversee internal control systems and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and tax obligations.
• Collaborate in a fast‑moving environment, cross‑functionally to align financial reporting and business goals.
• Manage cash flow, cost control, and ad‑hoc financial risk assessments.
• Optimize automation of ERP and accounting tools such as Netsuite, Payhawk, Ramp.
• Analyze and report variances, provide insights into financial performance metrics.
• Contribute to business planning and strategic initiatives with financial insights.
• Continuously improve financial processes, systems, and controls for scalability and efficiency.

Requirements

• Around 5+ years of experience in accounting, controlling, or financial management.
• Prior experience in a senior audit position or Big 4 firm is highly valued and/or Start‑up/Scale‑up experience.
• Degree in Accounting, Management, Finance, or a related field (bachelor’s or master’s).
• Chartered Accountant qualification is a strong plus.
• Solid understanding of accounting standards, financial statements, and tax regulations.
• Experience with tools such as Excel, Netsuite, Payhawk, Ramp, Oracle, or SAGE.
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and a solution‑oriented mindset.
• Ability to communicate financial insights clearly to both financial and non‑financial stakeholders.
• Fluent in English, both written and verbal.
