Jobbeschreibung

Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe, and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry, and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

What To Expect

Are you passionate about cutting-edge communication technologies and eager to shape the future of distributed sensor networks? We are looking for an engineer or scientist with a background in telecommunications, communications engineering, or a related field who wants to combine innovative research with hands-on implementation. In this exciting project, you will design and optimize advanced communication topologies — from point-to-point radio links to complex mesh networks — to create a next-generation multi-sensor network.

You will also take responsibility for the IT infrastructure, integrating servers into the network and configuring systems. Together with project partners and stakeholders, you will test your solutions in real-world field trials and technology demonstrations. You will also share your findings with the international research community through publications and conference presentations.

Are you highly organized, take initiative, and have a hands-on mentality? Then you’re a perfect fit for our team! Perhaps you are also thinking about pursuing a PhD? At DLR, we will support your academic journey!

Your tasks
  • Research and development of physical communication topologies (e.g., point-to-point radio links, mesh networks) in a multi-sensor network (optical, sonar, DAS, AIS, etc.)
  • The research focuses on the optimization and resilience (e.g., jamming) of the network while addressing the varying requirements of different sensor types
  • Configuration and administration of the network, including installation and operation of servers
  • Execution, evaluation, and analysis of field experiments and technology demonstrations, including collaboration with stakeholders to validate and optimize the network
  • Acting as a system/software engineer for the integration of individual sensors, in close cooperation with and support of various research teams
  • Publication of research results in scientific journals and presentation at conferences
Your profile
  • Completed university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in engineering or natural sciences (e.g., electrical and communications engineering) or a related field relevant to the position
  • Knowledge of various network topologies (e.g., mesh networks, point-to-point radio links) and experience in setting up and configuring communication networks
  • Knowledge of/experience in network administration (including server installation and operation)
  • Experience in integrating sensor systems into networks
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in Python and/or C++, and experience with the version control system Git
  • Valid driver’s license (EU class B is sufficient)
  • Fluent English skills (written and spoken)

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.

We look forward to getting to know you!
