Jobbeschreibung

The Institute of Communications and Navigation at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is dedicated to mission-oriented research in selected areas of communications and navigation. The work ranges from theoretical foundations to the demonstration of new procedures and systems in a real environment and is embedded in the DLR programs Space, Aeronautics, Transport, Security and Digitalization. The Nautical Systems department of the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation develops and tests new procedures and technologies for shore-based and on-board support in ship navigation, among other things.

Your tasks

As part of this, the Maritime Services working group focuses on alternative terrestrial navigation systems that complement global navigation satellite systems and enable navigation even under disturbed conditions. We are developing the maritime navigation system R-Mode and the appropriate receiver technology to meet the needs of maritime service providers and users. As far as it is compatible with our operational procedures, we offer you the opportunity to carry out your work under the conditions of mobile working. In addition, you can organise your working hours flexibly, provided that you work during core working hours.

  • Development of radio-based alternative methods for maritime navigation and the provision of time for maritime infrastructures
  • Selection, development, implementation and validation of real-time capable algorithms for the measurement and mitigation of sky-waves in the medium frequency range
  • Setting up a measuring station network of receivers with the ability to measure sky-waves
  • Statistical analysis of measurement results and prediction of the influence of interference on the performance of the navigation system
  • Assumption of project responsibilities
Your profile
  • Completed scientific university master degree in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, communications engineering or other relevant degrees and a completed PhD in one of these fields
  • In-depth expertise in at least one of the two areas of radio navigation or signal processing
  • Many years of experience working with Software Defined Radio (SDR) in the programming languages Python and C++
  • Several years of practical experience in the field of project acquisition, project work in international teams and the publication of scientific journal articles
  • Independent, creative and goal-orientated way of working with analytical skills to analyse facts and problems
  • Ability to carry out business trips
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken German and English

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 14 depending on qualifikations and assigned tasks.
