The RWTH Aachen University Hospital combines medical care, teaching, and research at an international standard. The University Clinic covers the entire spectrum of medicine, with 37 specialist clinics, 35 institutes, and six interdisciplinary units. Integrating health care, research, and teaching in one central building, this hospital provides optimal conditions for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration, as well as for clinical and scientific networking. Outstandingly well-qualified teams of doctors, nurses, and scientists care for patients' health. Patient-centered medicine and high-quality follow-up care are ensured by approximately 9,000 staff members. With 1,400 beds, the University Clinic cares for around 50,000 inpatient and 200,000 outpatient cases annually.

The Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a

Data Engineer (f/m/d)

Working hours: Full-time 100% (currently 38.5 hours/week)
Duration/Term of employment: 3 years with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate may pursue a doctoral degree.
Start date: As soon as possible
Remuneration: EG 13 (TV-L)

Description and essential criteria:

  • Support the collection, storage, and processing of large biomedical datasets by designing, building, and maintaining high-performance data processing infrastructure and developing data pipelines for analysis and applications.
  • Design, build, and maintain infrastructure and architecture for a unified data processing system.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines to handle structured and unstructured medical data (biosignals, clinical data) for evaluation using biostatistics and machine learning.
  • Collaborate with medical teams, natural sciences, medical informatics, biostatistics, data science, the Data Integration Center at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, and industry partners.
  • Create APIs for data access and develop user-friendly applications progressively.
  • Enhance data quality by implementing standards, anomaly detection, and deduplication strategies.
  • Assist in data analysis and machine learning model development by cleaning and preparing data.

Your profile:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Medical Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or related fields with skills in designing, building, and maintaining data processing systems and scalable data pipelines.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge in: Database design (relational, NoSQL, time-series, multimodal), Data integration, ETL processes, API development.
  • Practical experience with relevant programming languages such as SQL, Python, or Java.
  • Experience with Big Data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Airflow).
  • Knowledge of data flows, data architectures in healthcare, and standards/protocols in the sector.
  • Desirable: Experience with HPC clusters, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), project management skills, AI/ML knowledge, version control (Git), Docker, UX/UI design, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, highly organized, proactive, problem-solving skills, fluency in English (C1), and good German (B1).
    Willingness to learn new tools and trends.
