Job Description

Position: Research Associate for the project “TRR 181”, Subproject T2: Ocean Surface Layer Energetics § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Start date: As soon as possible, fixed until 30.06.2028 (fixed-term contract according to Section 2 of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

Scope and hours: Part-time, 75% of standard weekly hours

Responsibilities

Conduct academic research within the project. Opportunities for independent research, further academic qualifications, and doctoral studies are available.

The project focuses on understanding the dynamics of the oceanic surface mixed layer, especially the recently discovered submesoscales. The candidate will utilize high-resolution numerical modeling and observational data, and will be part of the “Theoretical Oceanography” group and the “ENERGY” Research Training Group, which provides training, seminars, and international research opportunities.

Candidate Profile
  • University degree in a relevant field (oceanic or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics)
  • Experience with Linux/Unix, scripting languages (e.g., Matlab, Python), and ocean modeling
  • Background in geophysical fluid mechanics is advantageous
  • Excellent English skills, team-oriented, enthusiastic, self-motivated, with a strong interest in research and scientific publication
