Position: Junior AI NLP Scientist (m/w/d) at Covestro

In this role, you will support the conception, development, and implementation of advanced AI models, with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) and information systems. Your responsibilities will include aspects of data engineering to ensure robust data pipelines and scalable AI systems. Your contributions will drive innovation in materials science, sustainability, and operational efficiency, while reinforcing Covestro's commitment to explainable and responsible AI practices.

What We Offer

In addition to comprehensive social benefits, we offer an attractive starting salary between €75,700 and €91,600 per year, plus a variable component for a full-time position. The exact salary depends on your qualifications and relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities

1. Identify and support current and future AI-related projects.
2. Analyze business and project requirements, and identify relevant data and tools for LLMs, AI models, and applications.
3. Assist in researching, developing, and maintaining models and applications based on LLM technology.
4. Support the design and architecture of AI solutions.

Candidate Requirements

1. PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, or related fields, with a focus on NLP and deep learning, especially transformer architectures.
2. Proven experience in developing and fine-tuning LLMs and NLP models using frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face, or LangChain, and methods such as RLHF, DPO, Distillation.
3. Experience in designing and developing information systems such as information extraction, recommendation, and decision support systems.
4. Expertise in deploying large language models in complex, distributed systems.
5. Strong skills in Python and SQL, and familiarity with data engineering tools like Apache Spark, Airflow, Databricks, or dbt.
6. Solid knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) for AI development (SageMaker) and data engineering (Glue, S3).
7. Experience with the development and evaluation of AI products.
8. Ability to analyze processes and design AI-based solutions from both technical and business perspectives.
9. Practical experience with MLOps frameworks for model lifecycle management and skills in creating and managing scalable data pipelines, including data preprocessing and feature engineering for AI applications.
