With around 400 students and about 50 colleagues in academia and services, Karlshochschule International University in Karlsruhe is an innovative non-profit university of applied sciences. The didactic principle of the university is to offer integrated, interactive, and constructivist teaching and thus we are working for instance with case studies, role plays, simulations, and project work.


Our Social Sciences & Humanities faculty focuses on cross- and transdisciplinary as well as holistic research and teaching in relation to alternative forms of living and working in civil society and the economy as well as forms of critical leadership. In particular, it systematically explores progressive politics, works with (analytic, continental and non-Western) philosophies and focuses on heterodox, pluralist economics and international relations.


Position Available:

For the next possible date, we are looking for a:

Professor of Political Economy (f/m/d)

Your critical and interdisciplinary approach and research interests are reflected in your scholarly activities and publications and incorporated in your understanding and practice of teaching.


You will engage in applied critical teaching and research in the areas of your academic and practical expertise, work with our international faculty and student body, and develop national and global academic partnerships.


We are especially interested in applicants with a background in political science or (pluralist) economics with contributions to the field of political economy, international political economy, comparative political economy or historical political economy. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach foundational courses in Political Economy and Economics for social sciences students, including critical approaches to economic theory, economic history, and international/comparative political economy.


We expect proficiency in a range of methodologies in social science, particularly an expertise in quantitative methods relevant to political economy, such as econometrics, statistical analysis, and causal inference methods. Openness and familiarity with case studies, process tracing, comparative analysis, and critical research methodologies (e.g., post-colonial or feminist approaches) are welcome.


You should be open to teach at different locations of the university with a focus on Chemnitz and Potsdam. A part-time professorship is possible.


Candidate Profile:

  • Deep commitment to the university mission and the academic profile of the social sciences & humanities faculty and engaged work with our international faculty and student body.
  • Engagement in both applied and critical teaching and research in the areas of your academic and practical expertise.
  • Expertise to work with diverse, international and multicultural student groups.
  • Willingness and preferably experience in raising third-party funds.
  • Proven track record in civic engagement and/or practical working experiences as well as an international biography, being fluent or native speaker to lecture in English.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage actively, creatively and joyfully in our academic community and become part of Karls' everyday life and living culture.
  • Teach high-quality courses on both undergraduate, graduate and executive level in your area of expertise according to a HAW (University of Applied Science) professorship.
  • Contribute to our degree programs in the field of social sciences & humanities, but also coach, mentor and support students and lecturers, advance academic development and services, including administrative self-organization, public outreach, and development of relevant networks.
  • Strategically develop consecutive and executive courses at the level of master’s programs, with a strong focus on critical, transformative and high-demand programs.
  • Contribute to joint research projects.
