Job Description:

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, more than 530 employees work daily to make future production more digital, flexible, and sustainable. In the »Laser Systems and Heating Technologies« group, we develop innovative laser systems for modern manufacturing, including additive processes, micro welding, targeted heating, and ablation with high-power lasers.

Within your thesis, you will investigate the current state of process simulations in laser-based additive manufacturing. You will perform melt pool and powder bed simulations for a highly dynamic rotating powder bed process, and validate your results through real system testing. Some tasks will be conducted on-site at our machine park.

  • Research the state of the art and fluid dynamics of powders and melts
  • Perform basic powder analyses to understand fluid behavior
  • Develop simulation investigations to predict behavior
  • Validate simulation results with real system data
What you bring to the table
  • Studying mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Knowledge of FEM simulation tools like Ansys is a plus
  • Experience with lasers or additive manufacturing is ideal
  • Independent working style and team spirit
