A leading research institute in Karlsruhe is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in Mineralogy and Geochemistry for a project on geotechnical barriers for radioactive waste repositories. The role involves extensive laboratory work, international collaboration, and the opportunity to contribute to scientific publications. Candidates should possess a PhD and strong knowledge in mineralogy and chemical analysis.
The Institute of Concrete Structures and Building Material, Department of Building Materials and Concrete Construction, along with the Materials Testing and Research Institute (MPA Karlsruhe) and the Competence Center for Material Moisture (CMM), led by Prof. Dr. Frank Dehn, are among Germany's leading institutions in materials testing and research into building and mineral materials. The Applied Clay Mineralogy working group is headed by Prof. Dr. Katja Emmerich.
As part of the BMUV-funded Sandwich Main Project, Phase 2 (Sandwich-HP2), the hydraulic Sandwich sealing system developed by KIT is being tested at a large scale in the Mont Terri rock laboratory (CH). This project involves international collaboration, with laboratory tests designed to optimize materials and parameters for hydro-mechanical-chemical modeling. Mineralogical and chemical characterization of mineral materials (especially bentonites) and pore solutions from laboratory experiments at various scales is required. The project aims to derive and model geochemically the laws of cation exchange at high solid:fluid ratios, considering dissolution and precipitation processes. Additional laboratory investigations will be developed independently.
