Unterföhring, Germany

S3C System Senior Architect, IRIS2 Satellite Constellation Control Center

ProgramME Description

IRIS² is the new European Union secure satellite constellation, designed to provide secure connectivity services, enhanced communication capacities, and high-speed internet broadband across the EU, its Member States, governmental users, private companies, and European citizens, addressing connectivity gaps.

SES, along with other consortium partners, was selected by the European Commission to build and operate the IRIS2 multi-orbit satellite constellation.

As IRIS2 progresses into its next phases, there is a need for support in service provisioning and product development related to the system's future offerings. The constellation will also support SES's commercial activities.

ROLE Description

In an agile environment requiring flexibility and adaptability, you will define the S3C architecture, including functional software breakdowns and interfaces. You will develop and maintain software solutions for GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite operations, ensuring compliance with stringent security requirements.

Your role involves collaboration with satellite manufacturers and software providers to align S3C deliverables with contractual requirements, operational concepts, infrastructure decisions, and cybersecurity standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Define the S3C architecture and interfaces with SES assets and the IRIS2 system.
  • Specify requirements for payload and subsystems interfaces with MCC and S3C.
  • Contribute to TT&C and crypto requirements, including onboard computer needs for operations and contingencies.
  • Propose encryption solutions for TT&C that meet government requirements, coordinating with SES teams.
  • Design command path topologies and determine the S3C component topology (constellation vs. satellite-specific).
  • Develop an industrial setup for software development, considering verticalization and component reuse.
  • Maintain control over operational software, ensuring maintainability.
  • Contribute to system Capex and Opex planning.
  • Identify and document risks via risk registers.
  • Create high-level architecture diagrams of S3C and its interfaces.
  • Determine make-or-buy decisions for S3C components.
  • Identify synergies and reusable components within IRIS2 and between other systems.

COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to work independently in complex environments with flexibility and strategic thinking.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Proven leadership and project management capabilities.
  • Expertise in satellite communication systems and ground control operations.
  • Proficiency with modern software technologies, cybersecurity standards, and network infrastructure.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or IT.
  • Minimum 10 years in satellite engineering/operations or real-time ground control software engineering.
  • Fluent in English; additional languages are advantageous.

OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Eligibility for a “SECRET” security clearance or equivalent.
  • Willingness to work at least 66% onsite.
  • Willing to travel as needed for project requirements.
