WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Back-End Web Applications Developer – European Commission. We seek an experienced Back-End Developer to join our client’s Information Systems team, supporting digital solutions in public health, food safety, and internal market domains. The role involves developing, maintaining, and optimizing core applications and systems that support health, food safety, and regulatory initiatives across Europe. You will help create secure, scalable, and high-performing back-end applications supporting the mission to protect human health, animal welfare, and food safety in Europe.

YOUR TASKS:

• Develop back-end web applications, implementing core business logic.
• Design and optimize applications for speed and scalability.
• Develop APIs for system integration.
• Implement security and data protection measures to ensure compliance and confidentiality.
• Design scalable software solutions.
• Write clean, functional code and ensure code quality.
• Analyze data, processes, and codes to troubleshoot and improve systems.
• Test and fix bugs to ensure high functionality.
• Create technical documentation for maintenance and updates.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• 7+ years of back-end development experience with Java (JDK8 or later) and JEE (version 7 or later), including XML and SOAP web services (e.g., JAX-WS).
• Strong proficiency in Oracle RDBMS.
• At least 5 years of experience with Git or SVN, especially with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, Bamboo).
• Thorough understanding of web development cycles, programming, and optimization techniques.
• Experience implementing security and data protection in high-compliance environments.
• Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills, with ability to work in an international, multicultural environment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

• Location: Brussels, Belgium, with options for home-working or onsite within 2 hours, up to 5 days/month.
