THE ROLE & THE TEAM

As a Principal Software Engineer in Application Security, you will play a key role in ensuring the security of our applications, services, and AI models. You will work in a dynamic environment, bridging responsible engineering teams and security, advocating for a security-by-design approach throughout the software development lifecycle. We seek an experienced technical expert to join Application Security's leadership team, influencing Zalando's security architecture and collaborating across a broader engineering organization.

1. Design and implement scalable, resilient solutions, taking ownership of new projects in application security.
2. Engage in hands-on development for core components, integration points, or POCs to unblock teams and pave technical pathways.
3. Analyze complex software systems to identify vulnerabilities, security risks, and resiliency issues, proposing mitigation strategies.
4. Facilitate technical alignment and decision-making across multiple teams.
5. Drive the adoption of advanced security tools, frameworks, and methodologies to enhance security posture.
6. Improve application security through automation and build platform capabilities following secure-by-design principles.
7. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and other Principal Engineers to embed security into all software development stages.
8. Mentor and develop software engineers.

1. You have extensive software engineering experience with hands-on expertise in application development and security.
2. You are fluent in at least one programming language.
3. You have experience with modern API design, distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and data processing pipelines.
4. You possess strong knowledge of application and cloud security, security by design, and secure development lifecycle practices.
5. You have excellent communication skills and can collaborate effectively across teams to incorporate security into broader engineering initiatives.
6. You have broad experience in large-scale engineering projects and their security challenges.
