Job Description:

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team dedicated to conducting excellent science every day.

The “Superconducting Magnets & Testing” (SCM) department is looking for a candidate to join its “Superconducting Magnet Technology” (SCM-SMT) group:

Physicist or Engineer (all genders)

This role involves supervision of superconducting magnet production and testing. The superconducting magnet will be produced by industrial partners, with acceptance testing conducted under FAIR's responsibility. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Supervision of superconducting magnet design, production steps, and factory acceptance tests
  • Coordination of experts for design reviews, production inspections, and test programs
  • Approval of factory acceptance tests
  • Coordination of transport of magnet components and related parts
  • Coordination of assembly at FAIR
  • Coordination of site acceptance tests
  • Management of technical documentation, test protocols, and acceptance protocols
  • Communication with manufacturers, transport companies, and relevant GSI departments
  • Handling administrative aspects with GSI administration departments

The supervision of superconducting magnets and testing requires an experienced engineer or scientist familiar with this field and international environments. Responsibilities include overseeing production, coordinating, and managing testing activities at FAIR.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A university Master’s degree in physics or engineering sciences (mechanical, cryogenic, electrical, or electronics) or equivalent
  • Experience with superconducting magnets and related systems, including operation and measurement techniques, focusing on mechanics, cryogenics, magnetic field measurements, powering, quench detection and protection, electrical testing, sensors
  • A structured, proactive approach with high responsibility, good teamwork skills, and ability to work under pressure
  • Fluent English; basic German skills are advantageous
  • Experience in coordinating production and testing activities
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools

The contract is limited until 30.06.2027. Salary follows the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund) at GSI.
