Professorship (W3) in Cognitive Robotics for Industrial Applications

INSTITUTE FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE | AT THE EARLIEST CONVENIENCE

Head of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA

Applications are invited for this dual role.

The University of Stuttgart is a leading technical university in Germany, situated in a vibrant high-tech and industrial region. It is committed to interdisciplinary research and education across engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

Fraunhofer IPA is one of the largest institutes within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, focusing on manufacturing engineering, robotics, and automation, employing nearly 1,000 staff.

The university seeks candidates for a W3 professorship in "Cognitive Robotics for Industrial Applications" within the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology. The role involves research in sensor and actuator technology, information processing, and control, with applications in logistics, architecture, agriculture, and life sciences.

Research areas include:
  1. Development and integration of cognitive robot systems for complex applications
  2. Computer vision in cognitive robotics
  3. Machine learning methods in cognitive robotics
  4. Modeling, controlling, and adapting robot-led processes
  5. Technologies for dependable, explainable human-machine interaction

The candidate will participate in research initiatives such as ARENA, excellence clusters, and innovation campuses, and will contribute to teaching and third-party funding acquisition.

This position follows the "Berliner model"—an appointment at the university with delegated research and management duties at Fraunhofer IPA. The candidate should have extensive experience in interdisciplinary research, strategic planning, and international project management, with a strong publication or patent record.

Applicants should submit a one-page description of their three most significant scientific achievements, including research, teaching, or innovation successes.

The role offers involvement in impactful projects and supports work-life balance through flexible policies. Applications should include a CV, certificates, publication list, research and teaching statements, scientific achievements, and be sent by June 16 to Prof. Kai Arras at the specified email, preferably as a PDF. Postal applications are also accepted.

The University of Stuttgart is committed to equal opportunity and encourages applications from women and disabled persons.
