Job Description:

Become part of the new and highly motivated, international machine learning and robotics research group at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at KIT. The mission of the Machine Intelligence and Robotics Lab is to create a new generation of autonomous and intelligent machines by combining a priori model knowledge, open-source architectures and software, real machine data with the latest machine learning methods and high-performance robotic hardware components.

The PhD position focuses on designing energy-efficient edge AI solutions using neuromorphic architectures to minimize energy consumption by leveraging brain-inspired spike-based computing paradigms. The challenge involves integrating multimodal event-based sensor data for use in unstructured dynamic environments with the legged robot ANYmal D. This entails developing complex algorithms for effective information extraction and fusion, contributing to enhanced adaptability, autonomy, and intelligence of mobile robots.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing robust, energy-efficient multimodal sensing systems with SNNs for event-based data.
  • Designing and implementing neuromorphic perception architectures on mobile robots.
  • Collaborating within an international project focused on neurorobotics.
  • Developing software architectures with ROS/ROS2 and testing on the ANYmal D robot.
  • Contributing to teaching and research in neurorobotics, AI, and perception.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related fields.
  • Experience in robotics, machine learning, or computer vision.
  • Background in neuromorphic computing, SNNs, or event-based sensors.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2.
  • Enthusiasm for scientific research and collaboration.
  • Excellent English skills.

Salary category 13 TV-L, depending on experience and qualifications.
