Sompo offers a unique opportunity for a Lead Underwriter Energy Power Generation in our Property & Energy team for Continental Europe. Our experienced global Energy Team, backed by Sompo’s financial strength, provides comprehensive underwriting across the entire Energy chain, from oil and gas extraction and refining to emerging renewable energy solutions. Operating from different regions, we offer tailored products and significant capacity. The Sompo Continental Europe unit has been focusing on Downstream Chemical and is expanding into Power Generation and Renewables. This position reports directly to the Continental Europe Head of Property & Energy.

Location: This role is based in one of our Continental European offices, preferably Paris, Cologne, or Munich.

What you’ll be doing:
  • The role will initially focus on underwriting and developing the Power and Utility sub-class portfolio, including Renewables within Continental Europe, with a focus on Central Europe. This includes operational risks as well as construction (CAR/EAR) risks.
  • Perform thorough underwriting of all accounts in accordance with guidelines and individual authority levels.
  • Develop and shape underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and technical guidance in collaboration with the CE Head of Property & Energy.
  • Provide advice on pricing, product development, and policy language.
  • Collaborate with local underwriting and business development teams to support new business initiatives.
  • Perform underwriting referrals as needed.
  • Build strong relationships with regional Energy teams across London, North America, Singapore, and Brazil.
  • Monitor industry and account trends, working with Energy Risk Engineering specialists to enhance underwriting quality.
  • Represent Sompo at broker, client meetings, and market events.
What you’ll bring
  • 7+ years of experience in underwriting operational and CAR/EAR risks for Power and Utilities.
  • A Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Civil Engineering degree or equivalent, with technical knowledge of Power Generation and Renewables underwriting.
  • Established relations and understanding of the CE Energy market.
  • Experience in developing products and technical underwriting guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building client relationships.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical skills for complex data.
  • Fluent in English; German and/or French is a plus.
