Job Description

The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution specializing in basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and a member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute holds a leading position both nationally and internationally. The Junior Research Group Viral Systems Modeling, led by Dr. Tanja Laske, develops computational methods to understand infectious disease biology at a systems level. Our team integrates data mining, bioinformatics, and virus dynamics modeling to analyze factors influencing virus replication and identify new therapeutic targets. A key focus is on defective viral genomes (DVGs) and their role in infection outcomes, using AI-supported models to predict their impact and evaluate their potential as antiviral agents. We analyze sequencing, multi-OMICs, and other experimental data to identify promising DVG candidates, aiming to enhance understanding of DVG biology and support the development of AI-driven antiviral therapies.

We seek a highly motivated, ambitious, and team-oriented candidate to start as soon as possible to:

  • Develop in silico approaches to study DVG biology, shaping a new era of data- and model-driven infection research
  • Work independently on research projects with high responsibility
  • Support and integrate into the research team, mentoring emerging scientists
  • Present findings nationally and internationally
  • Disseminate research through publications, social media, and outreach
Your Profile
  • PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, biotechnology, biosystems engineering, or a related life sciences field, preferably with infectious disease focus
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools for OMICs data, especially virus genomics and structural biology, network biology
  • Expertise in data- and model-driven approaches, machine/deep learning, large language models, virus dynamics modeling
  • Experience with high-performance computing and (web)-tool development
  • Interdisciplinary research experience and willingness to collaborate with wet-lab partners
  • Strong commitment, teamwork, communication, organizational skills, independence, flexibility, supervision experience
  • Excellent English skills (oral and written)
What We Offer
  • Work at a renowned Leibniz Institute
  • International team environment
  • Remuneration according to EG 13 TV-AVH, including pension scheme
  • 30 days annual vacation
  • Training opportunities, including language courses
  • Childcare grants
  • Health protection services
  • Flexible, family-friendly hours

This is a 1-year position with possible extension, starting as soon as possible. Part-time work is possible.

The LIV promotes equality and work-life balance. Severely disabled persons will be given priority if qualified.

Your application should include a motivation letter (max 1 page), CV, research summaries (max 0.5 page each), publication list, contact info for two referees, and relevant certificates. Applications in English are accepted until April 30, 2025. Later applications may be considered until the position is filled. We look forward to your application!
