GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR ( F acility for A ntiproton and I on R esearch) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensuring each day to conduct world-class science.

The international NUSTAR (NUclear STructure, Astrophysics and Reactions) collaboration comprises more than 700 engaged scientists from over 170 participating institutions wordwide. NUSTAR experiments are ongoing in the FAIR Phase-0 research program, and will be the first to be carried out at the new Superconducting-FRagment Separator (Super-FRS) facility at FAIR in the coming years.

The NUSTAR Experiment Area department is looking to hire a motivated

Safety and Quality Assurance Engineer (all genders)

as soon as possible to support the NUSTAR experimental program at GSI/FAIR.

The main tasks include:

  • supporting the preparation of risk assessments for NUSTAR components and experimental areas
  • ensuring safety and quality requirements are met during the installation, commissioning and operating phases of NUSTAR experiments at FAIR
  • identification and proper handling of non-conformities
  • the role of responsible safety officer (‘STV’) for the NUSTAR High-Energy Cave for the planning (and foreseeably also operation) phases
  • representation of the NUSTAR sub-project within GSI/FAIR on topics relating to safety and/or quality assurance, and liasing between NUSTAR groups and GSI/FAIR safety and QUA specialists

Candidates should possess:

  • at least a Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, quality assurance, physics or related discipline
  • several years of professional work experience, preferably in comparable scientific environments
  • outstanding organisational and communication skills
  • fluency in the German and English languages
  • a keen interest to work within a large collaboration in a scientific environment
