Research Associate for the Project “UPTAKE/PyMiCCS” (Horizon Europe Climate/BMBF) § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

This position is a fixed-term contract starting from 01.10.2024 or later, for a period of 30 months, suitable for part-time work. The role involves academic research in the project, with opportunities for independent research and further academic qualifications.

The project focuses on carbon dioxide removal (CDR), particularly evaluating co-deployment of biochar and rock dust for enhanced weathering, and integrating results into global soil and ecosystem models. It aims to develop strategies for sustainable upscaling of CDR methods, assessing trade-offs, co-benefits, and opportunities across geographical, sectoral, socioeconomic, demographic, and temporal dimensions.

Your responsibilities include:

  1. Contributing to a systematic review of CDR approaches, especially Enhanced Weathering and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement.
  2. Evaluating methodologies for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, including data collection on energy demand and costs, and developing deployment scenarios.
  3. Assessing and refining the potential and techno-economics of terrestrial Enhanced Weathering, including its environmental and agricultural benefits.
  4. Developing methodologies that feed into life cycle assessments (LCA) for these CDR methods.
  5. Disseminating results through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Your profile
  • University degree and doctorate in a relevant field.
  • Expertise in Enhanced Weathering and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement CDR methods.
  • Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with carbonate system chemistry, LCA, TEA, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
